A newsmaker you should know: Car enthusiast re-creates his dreams with Rev ’em car cruise

When Jim Gastgeb was about 5 years old, he pretended to drive a car by running around his Bethel Park home rotating a Frisbee in his hands as if it was a steering wheel.

When he was about 8, he and his neighborhood friends were building wooden go-carts painted in Steelers colors to race down the street.

A few years later, the budding gear head was eschewing cartoons in favor of “MotorWeek” on Saturday morning television and researching model options on the next family vehicle.

Successes start small

The 2008 Bethel Park High School varsity football team went undefeated in the regular season, won its first WPIAL championship and was state runner-up for the PIAA title.

For nearly all of these student-athletes, their journey toward excellence began with Bethel Park Junior Football, an all-volunteer, nearly 50-year-old program committed to success on and off the field.

“It is life after high school that we set our sights upon: preparing the young athletes for long-term achievement by teaching the value of discipline and hard work, and helping them develop a work ethic,” said Jim Gastgeb, director of the 1st Annual Rev’em Up for Kids.
